Goose Hunts

Goose Hunt Options

open water goose hunts

One of our large watershed lakes on a crop field, this year in corn, far ground. One of the better places through the year for large flocks of geese both light and dark. Lakes such as these are available for the goose hunter to set up his own blind and spreads on and off water.

Large or small goose spreads across crop fields and water - it is the hunter's choice of how to setup his hunt.

Snow Geese show how difficult it is to just shoot one. A crop stubble field a couple of miles from the refuge during the last week of regular season in late December.

Our Association Missouri goose hunting brings to the do it yourself hunter over 8,000 acres of crop stubble and winter wheat fields along the right kind of wetlands within the historic micro flyways of the three sub-basins that comprise the Lower Missouri River Basin of the Mississippi Flyway.

That is the goose attracting habitat for the hunter that has the ability to set up his own camouflage position, set out his own spreads and has his own goose calling skills.

We provide the private lease land reserved in advanced, the right regional location for that land, recommendation which of the 8,000 acres to hunt and a lodging listing of nearby accommodations. All the self guided goose hunter needs to do is simple get himself out here. The hunter hunts his own way as if this was his own land lease.

While we highlight our Missouri goose hunting we also have goose hunting in Kansas and Iowa However, our Missouri goose hunting areas are rarely lacking and far more productive simply due to the greater abundance of water in Missouri compared to Iowa or Kansas.

Missouri may be the present point of interest as the fact is that hunts rarely last past the first flight. This leaves much of the day for other activities.

A common approach is to set up the decoys and leave them in place on a crop field to hunt over each morning through the first flight and then go after some upland birds with both pheasant and quail being available or even include an afternoon deer hunt.

Within our approach to managed hunts the hunter for one cost may hunt geese, duck, upland, deer and turkey on any of our land in any or all of the three states where we manage lease land.

The hunter may spend his entire year after Whitetail and Mule Deer, pheasant and quail, Eastern and Rio Grande Turkey hunting as well as all the goose hunts he may have the time to do. There are simply too many options available and the hunter will settle on one or two game interests and spend most of his time within that pursuit.

Goose Hunts not Goose Hunt Training

We are not attempting to train any hunter on goose hunting. We are providing another illustration of how goose hunts are conducted within our self guided system of private land waterfowl hunting.

We have much acreage available and allow the goose hunter to determine local concentrations and take advantage of that rather than limited acreage near a refuge. This allows our hunters more options than a local guide service limited to the driving distance from the motel. The consequence is the hunter must make his own setup in terms of decoys and blind.

goose huntsLayout blinds are very useful on Association land since they are lightweight, easy to carry and can be moved from spot to spot in a very short period of time. Their value in MAHA is that the better goose hunting is after scouting current/local flight patterns,  setup on a nearby crop field and place the spread/blinds relative to the flight pattern and wind. This approach continues with its value as we do not have fields lined with pits or provide goose blinds on the over 8,000 acres we lease for goose hunting or any of the further tens of thousands of acres of land we have available to hunt.canada goose hunting

Another blind variation that doubles as a decoy carrier. When fields are frozen or dry using an ATV to set out a spread is possible. The rule is not to leave any ruts.

youth goose hunt

Late season cold weather goose makes a tough youth hunt. Return migration spring Snow hunt may be a better opportunity. Strange day when the ducks came in better than the geese.

Field duck hunting is less popular than that on our wetlands. The few that field duck hunt frequently have a chance at a goose limit first.

late goose seasonMAHA does not provide permanent goose pits or field blinds because the pattern of the birds changes from year to year. Layout blinds are light weight and easy to move from spot to spot. We encourage our goose hunters to make their own set-up decisions and provide their own make-shift or layout blinds.

Field goose hunting from layout blinds requires scouting, decoys, the ability to call and wind direction plays a major role. Those willing to put in the time and effort bring home the most geese
