Advantages

Kansas wild Rio Grande Turkey hunts is a surprise to many that think this bird is limited to Texas. What Kansas has to offer is a 6 week long, all day long spring season with 2 tags available for over the counter purchase and the ability to tag two toms in one day. A further advantages of no snakes and no cactus. And, a lot of birds in large flocks.

What MAHA brings to wild turkey hunts is the private land we lease for our exclusive use, two full time staff that are very familiar with the Rios, and a hunter's choice lodging listing for every county where we lease land.

For every one of our do it yourself hunters seeking to tag a couple of toms we will recommend to them what properties to hunt, they will have more ground to setup on than time to cover it all and most importantly they will be able to hunt on their own, their own style, their own calling and their own ability to camouflage. This is the kind of hunt for those that know how to hunt. For those just learning they will gain much experience in the process and the Rio Grande is an easier bird to learn on than the Eastern.

Location

Just as are our Mule Deer, the Kansas Rios is a habitat and regionally specific turkey that is not indigenous to the entire state. Those that study ground nesting birds know the value of the right environmental limiting factors that geographically separates different species. In the case of the Rio Grande, it is a matter of humidity, altitude, average rainfall and the timing of rains.

We have long recognized where the right environmental limiting factors exist and within that region and we have a thorough understanding of the habitat most frequently occupied. This means the Association hunter will be spending his time in the right region of the state and on the right habitat identified to a specific numbered property on our map sheets and will be spending his time Rio Grande hunting.

No Mystery

No hoping, wishing or wanting. Long before any hunter leaves home he will know exactly where he will hunt, he will have his lodging reservations in place, may purchase his licenses online or over the counter once within the state. All the hunter has to do is simply talk to us by telephone, travel out here and when he arrives he goes straight to his reserved land and hunts on his own separated from other hunters.

Kansas Rio habitat

Early spring nesting field. Thin weedy area with a year round stream in the wood line to the left. The surrounding higher ground is in pasture. A crop field is further in the property. The crop field and this nesting area is out of observation from the road and there is not an active farm yard in three of the surrounding 4 sections.

It all comes down to the right Rio Grande habitat in the right region of the state that has the environmental limiting factors that ensure reproduction. This picture is the roost area on the slope leading down to the nesting area in the earlier picture.

Our success gallery has a lot of birds and hunter pictures. That is the effect. The cause is habitat such as seen here.

And, we have more options all for the same cost. Simply by traveling over to Missouri the hunter may purchase over the counter two more spring season tags and continue his hunting trip beyond that of Kansas Rios onto Easterns as well with all the same advantages we listed above.

That is two over the counter tags in each state for four tags total between Kansas and Missouri. Two states and two bird species, on the same trip. For those collecting toms by the state we also offer more land in Iowa, however the Iowa tag must be applied for through a competitive lottery.

Continuing the advantages to our approach to do it yourself hunts on private land leases is that the same cost that allows for spring season Rio Grande Turkey hunts allows for Mule and Whitetail Deer hunts as well.

Rio Grande Turkey in Western Kansas

Sent into us by a traveling upland bird hunter while on a pheasant hunt. The picture is from mid December right after a freezing rain turn to snow weather front moved through. We largely keep member names and picture locations anonymous so that no hunter feels he is giving away any hot spot he may have found. These same hunters also realize their sending in pictures promotes the Association keeping it not just viable, but strong. The payback is more of the better land in the right regions to gain the hunter the hunt quality he is after.
