| Wild BirdsPrivate land do it yourself wild Bobwhite Quail hunting in Kansas, Missouri and Iowa for the upland bird hunter seeking wild quail hunting on natural habitat. Our self guided quail hunts are for both singles and coveys and the average hunter can expect to find zero to eight coveys a day. For those that immediately qualify this as poor quail hunting compared to the magazine articles on Texas quail hunting having 15 to 25 coveys per day the distinction between us must be examined.
Texas StyleTexas quail hunting lease operations sometimes described as "race track hunts" involves walking or riding 4 wheelers down bulldozed cleared roads and trails until the dogs running the edges go on point. The covey is flushed and what can be shot from the cleared road is shot at and the rest let to fly. The dogs retrieve any shot birds and the quail hunters continues on down the trail. There are others that practice different quail hunting methods in Texas with released quail however we selected to highlight this one as being the most unusual yet told to us. Two factors play at this. The first is the Texas brush of cactus and the second is the presence of snakes both of which deter hunter foot movement off the trails. Next, is that the dry and hot Texas climate does not allow adequate scenting conditions for many dogs to find scent cone enough from a single quail to go on point. None of these elements come into play with our quail hunting. Our dogs get to hunt under all conditions except the most extreme of winters. Kansas, Missouri, Iowa StyleContrast to the central mid-west be it in Kansas, Missouri or Iowa where the cool winters allow for the ideal quail scent conditions of frequently wet ground cover, wind and lower temperatures where even the average bird dog is able to point single bobwhite. Without cactus or snakes, hunters and dogs are able to walk across the country side while not as easy as crossing a cut grass lawn, it is certainly traversed by anyone with a good pair of boots. With these conditions even an average day of 4 coveys of 20 birds where the dog's covey point and anywhere from 2 to 10 more singles points easily leaves the hunter the opportunity to harvest 2 birds per covey and a day's limit after four coveys. With each covey and subsequent singles action lasting 20 to 40 minutes it is easy to consume an entire quail hunting day's worth of light over 4 coveys. This hunt style is for enjoying the dog action rather than bird collecting.
