Kansas Pheasant

Kansas has far more milo fields than that of Iowa or Missouri. Every milo field regardless how sparse any surrounding cover habitat may be in that field should be walked as milo will always attract quail as its most preferred food source.

Early season milo stubble long after combine harvest will have leaf that will cover the space between the rows and provide excellent quail and pheasant holding cover. Late season milo stubble looses its leaf leaving little or no cover value.

A common early season milo field tactic is to walk the stubble from the point furthest away from available cover to that cover. Birds in the field not holding for point will more likely run rather than flush to the heavier cover spots.

January milo stubble. November and early December milo stubble would have fully covered over this small Brittany. This stubble has had several snow falls and more rainfalls since harvest.
