Self guided private Kansas hunting lease land for Rio Grande and Eastern Turkey; Mule and Whitetail Deer; pheasant and quail hunting.

Whitetail Deer

What our private Kansas deer hunting leases offers is the earlier deer season for the muzzleloader deer hunter that seek to hunt the pre rut, September, bachelor group bucks, a long Kansas archery deer season and a trail of the rut Kansas modern gun season for 3 1/2 months of deer seasons. Kansas deer seasons precede, overlap and are offset with those of Missouri and Iowa thereby capable of doubling many hunter's time in the field making vacation day scheduling all the easier.

Our Kansas lease land offers the further adventure of a wide variety of habitats of the large open spaces where individual trees may be landmarks to the heavily wooded creek bottoms that vary in width from being easy to see through to dense multi layers of over story and undergrowth. A unique habitat of our this state not found in the other states is the large expanse of tall grass prairie the deer use as both bedding and daytime loafing areas. These grass areas allow the whitetail to be completely concealed from view while maintaining a barrier that causes any approaching hunter or predator to make noise by passing through the closely growing grass.

Kansas Deer

kansas deerEveryone has read the articles about Kansas trophy deer hunting. A reputation Kansas well deserves. However, for many hunters they will have eyes on far more quality racked bucks than they will ever harvest. So easy to see and so hard to tag.

For many of our long term do it yourself hunters they have worked their way up to where what we consider archery trophies at 130 and firearms at 140 are not any longer big enough for harvest.

This hunter is in just that category working hard scouting each year to find and hunt the truly exceptional racked bucks and as such goes years between deer.

Kansas Rio Grande Turkey hunting habitat consists of wooded streams on crop fields similar to the background in this picture. All turkey hunting is on wild birds on private leases held for our exclusive use.

Do not let those woods deceive. They are thin enough to see through and run for over a mile along a stream. Hunting along the tree edge with a strutting/feeding area to the front is a typical setup. This picture was taken during the last week of a long, 6 week, Kansas spring season, well after green up. This is a time when the toms are consider easier to pull off the hens simply due to the majority of the hens having started sitting on their nests. The toms, however, are not ready to give up the spring courtship.

Mule Deer

Our Kansas Mule Deer hunting is something of a novelty to those more acquainted with the desert or mountain country Mule Deer hunting.

Kansas Mule Deer hunting is consistent with the open ground nature of the Mule Deer while also incorporating the tall and short Kansas grass prairie. Some of their favorite areas include the dry, open and heavily pastured by cattle and low lands. These seemingly barren areas with occasional small plumb thickets and tree stands appear incapable of hiding the Mule Deer herd that surprises many Kansas hunters with their sudden appearance from cover initially believed to be incapable of hiding anything more than a jack rabbit.

While the Kansas Mule Deer tag is greatly limited, those that do draw such a tag will be rewarded with the opportunity for some of the best plains Mule Deer hunting to be found in Kansas.

Rio Grande Turkey

Limited rainfall, humidity, altitude and low moisture winters creates a large pocket of Rio Grande Turkeys that rivals any of the more widely known Rio Grande Turkey states such as Texas.

While a surprise to many that our wild Rio Grande Turkey hunts are as good and bird population are as large as they are it is also a welcomed relief as much as by what is absent from our Rio hunts. That is we do not have cactus and snakes.

While Kansas has rattlers, hunters will be hard pressed to find one not just during a hunt, but also over the next 10 years of Kansas hunting. For us residents, the sighting of a rattle snake is far more often a story about someone else that knows someone that saw one than actual first hand experience. This includes not just spring turkey hunters, but also the early season upland bird hunters covering much ground with their dogs.

The reason for our lack of snakes is due to our best Kansas hunting is within the agricultural zone ranging from 45 to 55% land use in farming. Row crop equipment does much to keep snake populations well below that found in wooded areas.

Kansas Rio Grande hunting also extends eastward toward lower elevations meeting the higher humidity and heavier rainfalls that separate the Kansas Rio region from the Eastern Turkey in the east quarter of Kansas. Kansas Eastern Turkey hunting is along the more heavily wooded creek bottoms that connect many small wood patches cutting once again through farm fields. If wanting a criteria for choosing between Kansas Rio Grande or Eastern Turkey hunting the bow deer hunter will find more suitable closed in wooded cover within the Eastern Turkey range while the rifle hunter has the deer hunting advantage within the big open Kansas Rio Grande Turkey range.

Upland Bird

Kansas upland bird hunts are over vast areas where wild pheasant and Bobwhite Quail overlap or one is more predominate over that of the other.

Just as the upland bird variety is widely present to allow for both on one hunt or day that habitat follows the same course from crop edge, draws and tall grass. All this combined makes for the adventure of different hunting techniques and bird dog experience that will make for a better overall hunt as well as a bird dog better capable of identifying target habitat.

Kansas pheasant hunting is for only wild pheasant along a choice of Kansas habitat ranging from tall grass to brush filled draws to crop edge. Kansas pheasant hunting is for those that prefer individual or small group pheasant hunting watching their dogs work. We do not allow any type of drive or gang pheasant hunting.

Kansas quail hunting is for wild Bobwhite Quail along miles of crop edge fields. The Kansas quail hunter with a brace of dogs and a hunting buddy walking both sides of the light cover creeks will find plenty of covey and the prized singles quail action our mild winter weather allows. Kansas quail hunting offers a choice of mixed bag Kansas pheasant hunting and variety of habitat that while the quail hunter will enjoy the easy to walk crop edge the more rugged draws and tall grass will provide more pheasant action. Kansas is distinct as it allows the upland bird hunter's choice of concentrating his hunting time on either pheasant or quail or both, the same day, hunt or season.

Kansas Hunter Feedback

kansas pheasant

John, Had a very good hunt in [location deleted], harvested a number of young birds that would indicate to me that they had a good hatch. Hunting was somewhat tough due to the heavy cover and warm temperatures, but the old master is still is able to hunt in the mornings before it got to warm. Attached are a couple of pictures of the master (Zeke) with a few roosters. Mike

John, Attached are a couple of pictures that I got of a pretty nice mule deer buck and some does he was with. He was about a half a mile from where I will be hunting around a cut milo field and a wheat field. And oh yeah, I do have a mule deer tag for that unit. He is not the buck that I have seen for the last two years, but he will do just fine. Take care, Mike

MAHA Kansas Hunting Advantage

When it comes to our self guided Kansas hunting lease land very few other pay to hunt options will compare with the total acreage, number of available field days, types of habitat and the fact that all of our game is 100% natural on natural habitat. Combine the Kansas hunting seasons with Missouri and Iowa and that leaves the do it yourself hunter with more options than to be found anywhere.

Kansas Waterfowl

"250 plus decoy spread consistedĀ of shells and motion based goose decoys which move in the wind to give it a realistic appeal. The weather was nothing compared to the single digits from the day before. The temp was around 20-25. Because it was such a sunny day I figured I would take a picture of our decoy spread to show you what we were hunting in. The birds were moving most of the day and because it is now Spring snow goose season we are able to use electric call which really get the job done. I had four small groups decoy and I ended up with four snow. I can't complain since I only hunted from 12 to 5..."

While Kansas cannot boast the waterfowl numbers or wetlands that Missouri has. It does offer some great field set possibilities next to farm ponds and watershed lake on crop ground better some refuge areas and the Missouri River.
