A collection of late summer Iowa Bobwhite Quail habitat pictures to show a bit better with leaf on rather than during the season pictures as a means of illustrating cover. The intent is to take away the mystery for those that travel to hunt as to what good quail habitat looks like.

The filter strip program while growing in Iowa is not to that level of Missouri. This filter strip on an Iowa bean field runs serpentine between the crop field and the drainage cannel to the river at the far ground.

The crop field and the weed growth in the cannel add variety of food sources while the native grass filter strip provides year round cover.

A more common type of Iowa quail cover is the open drainage through lightly wooded to wood lot edge. in this case this picture represents what we typically describe as a lightly wooded dry drainage. In this case the drainage runs through a hay field making it less likely to be a better quail spot than if the fields were planted in row or grain crops.
