Turkey Hunting

Our Iowa turkey hunting land does lend itself to the self guided turkey hunter. However, few take part as the Iowa spring turkey tag and hunting is by a draw system with an expensive price tag.

Those that do hunt turkey on our private land do so for the adventure of adding one more state to their list of successful wild turkey hunts. To date, over 98% of the spring turkey hunters in the Association have filled their Iowa spring tags.

A photo taken from an Iowa bird hunter on a recent fall season hunt: "I've never seen so many turkeys. This was one of a half dozen flocks I saw in one day."

Pressure

Overall, our private Iowa land is relatively under used due to deer and turkey tag prices and draw limitations. That more than any reasons leaves us with the limited Iowa acreage that we hold in lease.

The upland bird hunter being a minority in the Association certainly takes the opportunity of the earlier Iowa opening season in October and earlier colder winter temperatures. However, for most upland bird hunters once Missouri opens a week later those that seek quail hunt that state while Kansas draws those that want pheasants. This leaves most of Iowa during prime deer season to deer hunters.

Iowa Hunter Feedback

...Enclosed a picture of my [location deleted] opening day bow kill. Pulled this guy in with two additional strutters, 32 hens and 5 jakes. Got to watch the show for another 45 minutes after I shot this bird. None of the birds spooked and continued to strut & feed. It was a memorable hunting day.

Could have arrowed another long beard at 4 yards a few hours later, but chose not to end my [location deleted] season so soon. After getting our tails whacked this youth weekend, yet again…I may be regretting that decision.

Thanks again John for all of your help. It’s already been a truly rewarding spring!!!!

Steve

P.S. My last two MAHA turkeys have an average score of 80.5. That’s mind-boggling. This bird was not big by mid-West standards, yet had great spurs (1 ½) and a great beard ( 11 ¾). A turkeys a turkey, but I’m beginning to see a trend in [location deleted - of course]

Congratulations on the bow harvest (Steve has harvested turkey by bow in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas) - a special achievement. Thanks Steve for your continuing line of success pictures and good hunt accounts. You are a good evaluative source for the leases, keep the feedback coming both the good and the bad.
