Upland Bird Hunting

MAHA Iowa upland bird lease land offers the chance for both quail and pheasant hunts in a rare part of Iowa where both upland birds overlap.

Quail hunts are along the many dry drainages of the upper fringe of the Grand River Watershed rising up out of Missouri into southern Iowa. Our Iowa quail range overlaps that of pheasant populations for a mixed bag hunt of when a dog goes on point the upland bird hunters does not know if a quail or pheasant will flush.

Pheasant hunts are along many grain crop fields cut by open brush filled drains allowing good eyes on dog action and blue sky shooting. While pheasant may be Iowa's strongest upland bird hunter attraction, south Iowa pheasant range with its bonus of overlapping quail hunts makes the southern Iowa region a good bird hunt for easy eyes on dog, easier edge habitat walking and thousands of acres avaible for quail and pheasant hunts without having to knock on doors.

Iowa Quail Hunting

From the same Iowa hunter that sent in this harvest picture are some dog on point showing Iowa bird habitat pictures. In this case it was this dog's first season in the field. The comments below each pictures captured from the conversation that went with the picture delivery.

We only bag this many for a first year dog, otherwise it is a different kind of hunt.

This was the cover on the farm that gave them one of the best quail hunts this seasons. Took 4 hours to cover this one spot.

Not all the cover was as thick as in the overall habitat picture seen above as there were plenty of wooded creek bottoms and fence lines.

The cover did thicken up in spots showing a variety to the vegetation. Pictured above is some canary grass that is prevalent in southern Iowa.

Shooting did become difficult and bird in the bag rate compared to points dropped in several areas of this one farm.

In this section of the farm shooting ceased (could not see over the cover) and the time spent taking pictures and flushing quail. The bottom line for this first season dog she did great. It was a good season in Iowa. We had fun. And, these pictures help with the memories.

Thank you for the pictures Bob, they remind us well what we are not doing now.
