Fall turkey season is on par with our Mule Deer hunting as the least hunted of all our options. It has become far more attractive lately with the liberal Missouri and Kansas over-the-counter tags and numbers of either sex birds that may be harvested to include on the same day, all made possible by large wild flocks. Most of all with the Kansas season opening as early as it does many are able to get a hunt in without detracting from other pursuits such as archery deer, upland or waterfowl.

The last of a 30+ birds that just happened to cross in front of us when we parked to scout a potential new land lease. The farm also had the right mix of roost, strutting, feed and water habitat to make us believe these birds were year round residents and not a fluke.

Kansas

Fall turkey season offers a great deal of flexibility right down to the use of dogs in Kansas and another excuse to deer scout or hang stands.

Kansas turkey hunting is unique to our other states for several reasons. The first is that baiting is legal. Turkey tags are available by application or over the counter. The fall turkey season runs from early October into January breaking for firearms deer season. All day long hunting by shotgun or bow. There are up to 4 fall tags available depending on the management units that vary from the spring and also from year to year. Both male and female, mature birds and jakes are legal game. And, dogs are permitted. The final attraction to Kansas fall turkey season is the presence of huntable numbers of both Eastern Turkey and Rio Grande Turkey.

Iowa

Iowa's autumn hunts are available to residents only. That is not as bad as it may seem as the number of birds in Missouri and Kansas greatly out number Iowa and non-residents may apply for spring tags.

Missouri

Missouri's fall turkey season is separated between gun and archery methods.

The archery permit is good for two birds or deer and both sexes in both cases. Just It opens early on September 15 and runs to the rifle deer in the second week of November. It then reopens generally at the start of the fourth week in November and runs to January 15. The tag may be purchased over the counter or online. Toms may be hunted is all day long.

Missouri's firearms hunting is from the middle to the end of October and there are some closed counties. All day hunts. The limit is two birds of either sex.
