We are not attempting to train any hunter on goose hunting. We are providing another illustration of how goose hunts are conducted within our self guided system of private land waterfowl hunting.
We have much acreage available and allow the goose hunter to determine local concentrations and take advantage of that rather than limited acreage near a refuge. This allows our hunters more options than a local guide service limited to the driving distance from the motel. The consequence is the hunter must make his own setup in terms of decoys and blind.

Layout blinds are very useful on Association land since they are lightweight, easy to carry and can be moved from spot to spot in a very short period of time. Their value in MAHA is that the better goose hunting is after scouting current/local flight patterns, setup on a nearby crop field and place the spread/blinds relative to the flight pattern and wid. This approach continues with its value as we do not have fields lined with pits or provide goose blinds on the over 8,000 acres we lease for goose hunting or any of the further tens of thousands of acres of land we have available to hunt. |

Another blind variation that doubles as a decoy carrier. When fields are frozen or dry using an ATV to set out a spread is possible. The rule is not to leave any ruts. |

Late season cold weather goose makes a tough youth hunt. Return migration spring Snow hunt may be a better opportunity. Strange day when the ducks came in better than the geese. Field duck hunting is less popular than that on our wetlands. the few that field duck hunt frequently have a chance at a goose limit first. |

MAHA does not provide permanent goose pits or field blinds because the pattern of the birds changes from year to year. Layout blinds are light weight and easy to move from spot to spot. We encourage our goose hunters to make their own set-up decisions and provide their own make-shift or layout blinds.
Field goose hunting from layout blinds requires scouting, decoys, the ability to call and wind direction plays a major role. Those willing to put in the time and effort bring home the most geese.
